Red Fort Delhi | Lal Quila - Information, Timings, History, Images

Lal Qila (Red Fort) is the new name of the famous fort, Fort - A - Moalla, which was the capital of the time apart from being the focal point of Shahjahanabad. This fort was established during the middle of the 17th century.

Red Fort was constructed by Ustad Ahmad, construction of this fort started in 1639 which continued till 1648. However, additional work of the fort began in the mid-19th century. This huge fort is built of red stone which is one of the grand palaces of the world. The fort is spread over an area of 2.41 km, and the main gate of the two forts is Lahore Gate and Delhi Gate. Lahore Gate is near Chatta Chowk which was built for the royal families. This red fort is currently a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Things to do in Red Fort

Many beautiful structures are also present in this beautiful monument which includes Diwan-i-Aam and Diwan-e-Khas.

1. Diwan-i-Aam

It is said that in Diwan-e-Aam the king used to listen to the problems and complaints of the common man, this is a palatial structure which Is nothing short of a miracle. The Diwan-i-Aam located in the fort still has a balcony in which the king used to sit and listen to the grievances of the people and solve their problems. 

2. Diwan-i-Khaas

The Diwan-i-Khaas Raja was built for his personal meetings and conferences. 

3. Moti Masjid

Moti Masjid is another attraction of the fort which is located nearby. The mosque was the private mosque of the time which was built by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Another attraction of Moti Masjid located in the fort is the Hammam (Royal Bath) which is west. Is in the direction. 

4. Chatta Chowk

Chatta Chowk is a 'covered market', a shopping spot in Delhi near the Red Fort. It is an area where silk, jewelery and other items were sold to the royal family at that time. 

5. Mumtaz Mahal

Mumtaz Mahal Red Fort, which is currently a museum, is another attraction here, this palace was built at the southern end of the palace row. Mumtaz Mahal located here is one of the 6 palaces that was built by Emperor Shah Jahan. Nakkar Khana is considered the gateway to Rang Mahal in the Red Fort. The main purpose of building this three-storey building was music which used to be here 5 times a day. This place is also called Hathipole because the one who came at that time was taken from here on the elephant. 

6. Rang Mahal

Rang Mahal or Rang Mahal situated in the Red Fort is another attraction of the Red Fort here. This is the place where the queens of the Emperor Shah Jahan and their kings lived. Every year, on the occasion of Independence Day, the national flag is hoisted by the Prime Minister of the country. Also, a sound and light show is organized here in the evening which describes the Mughal history.
Another attraction of the fort here is the archaeological museum and the Indian War Memorial Museum, which you must see.

Red Fort Timing


Red fort opens from 8 am to 6 pm everyday except Monday. The fort has a guide, a small canteen, toilets, wheelchair access and parking space in view of tourist facilities.
